Honouring Heritage and Leadership

The King Koko Symposium 2026, themed “Honouring Heritage, Strengthening Governance, and Building Bridges Through Cultural Diplomacy,” will take place on January 26–27, 2026, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The event will celebrate the legacy of King Koko Mingi VIII, the Amanyanabo of Nembe, a visionary leader remembered for his courage, diplomacy, and defence of sovereignty during colonial times

The two-day symposium will unite traditional rulers, scholars, policymakers, and cultural advocates to explore the connection between governance, heritage, and peacebuilding. Day one will feature a Truck Regatta, cultural performances, keynote addresses, and panel discussions on cultural diplomacy and leadership lessons from King Koko’s legacy. Breakout sessions and workshops will focus on youth empowerment, history preservation, and heritage education.

Day two will include a plenary on governance and indigenous knowledge, an interactive dialogue on oral histories, and a cultural exhibition showcasing Nembe art, crafts, and attire. The event will conclude with the King Koko Leadership Award Night, recognizing individuals who exemplify excellence, integrity, and service in leadership

Organized by the King Koko Foundation, the symposium seeks to strengthen cultural identity and promote unity through dialogue and tradition. It stands as both a commemoration and a call-to-action reminding communities that heritage and good governance are inseparable pillars of progress.
